After a morning camera exercise we headed out to explore the city! The neighborhood that we focused on is run by a new group of Portuguese entrepreneurs that have established every kind of shop imaginable! From restaurants to barbershops, coffee shops, travel agents, and little grocery stores…we focused in on an old shopping mall and a Cape Verdian cookie factory. The small cookie factory specializes in making traditional cookies. We saw them make these heavenly smelling little vanilla wafers that resembled miniature pancakes. We learned that these cookies, in particular, are meant to be enjoyed with a glass of milk as they tend to be drier than the traditional cookie you or I would be used to. Unfortunately, in both of these locations, the mall and the cookie factory, lighting was a little tough for the students and their skills were really put to the tested. But our kids came out with some great environmental portraits and a lot of motion blur…whether that was intentional or not…
