Our last critique of the week is always a bittersweet moment. On the one hand, we get to see how far these guys have come, but it also means we’ll need to say goodbye soon. It’s friday, and we have a lot of work yet to do, but today is one of my favorite parts of the workshops. sWhile the students are writing and practicing their speeches, the print shop is busily churning out photos that will be hung in the exhibition for the students. And this afternoon, our students will come together to sign their images as artists.

One of the most powerful elements of the workshops, in my opinion, is the transformation these students experience during their print signing. When the students walk into the room, they see a huge table covered in large beautifully printed images. They always gather around the table, searching for their image, taking in all the wonderful work, and reflecting on their journey from the week. For many of these students, the week has been full of struggle. Manual photography is not easy, and we didn’t go easy on them. Their tools were unfamiliar, the locations were difficult, and our days were LONG. These guys worked really hard to get to today. More than a few signatures were made with shaky hands and there were plenty of tears, hugs, and smiles to celebrate.
